A Basic Primer for Video Lighting

In the rapidly converging worlds of still photography and motion capture, light, lighting products and techniques are a vital
part of the image-making process. While most
of the lighting principles for video are the same
as lighting for still photography, the fast-paced
demands of video require being pretty quick
on your feet. Also, if your knowledge of lighting is based only on strobe lights or electronic
flash, it’s time to enter the brave new world of
Lighting for video can be very straightforward
because you can see lighting effects as you prog-
ress through the shoot. While it’s possible to fix
problems you didn’t “see” while shooting in post-
production, this is time-consuming work, so watch
carefully as you arrange and adjust your lighting.
Keep your lighting simple, concentrate on your
story and most of all have fun!
