LOWEPRO FLIPSIDE SPORT
For those who prefer photography mixed with outdoor adventure, learning
that LowePro has expanded its popular Flipside Sport camera pack line
is welcome news. The Flipside Sport 20L joins the smaller 15L and 10L
and can carry an extra pro body with grip or extra lenses plus accessories,
compared with its less roomy brothers. Its features include LowePro’s
stowaway “All Weather AW” cover, room for a 1.5-liter hydration pouch, an
integrated tripod attachment system, extra carry loops, a padded waistbelt
and a tablet sleeve for an iPad or Macbook Air–sized device.
In use, the Flipside Sport 20L is a solid outdoor pack on par with the
quality of higher-end technical gear. The “flip” aspect of these packs refers
to the ability to take your arms out of the shoulder straps with the waistbelt on and spin the bag around to access gear from a zipper between the
straps. It sounds a little odd, but it works very well.
So grab the LowePro Flipside Sport 20L, dust off your hiking boots
and get ready for outdoor adventure—photographer style.
ALIENBEES ABR;;; RINGFLASH
The shadow-free lighting and unique catchlights of a ringflash make this
lighting technique popular with fashion and portrait shooters, but it takes
a very specific piece of gear to create this look. Enter the Alien Bees
ABR800 Ringflash. At under $400, it is one of the most economical, full-featured ringflashes on the market. The ABR800 gives you six f-stops of
power variability ( 10 Ws to 320 Ws) via a stepless slider adjustment (full to
1/32 power). You have three mounting options (tripod, light stand, or hand-held) and a built-in optical slave for wireless firing, and it runs on standard
120 Vac ( 50-60 Hz) power. Eight modeling lamps around the ring give you
true “what you see is what you get” modeling light capability. Finally, the
ABR800 is compatible with the Alien Bees Vagabond power pack, allowing
you to create ringlight images both in the studio and on the street.
TENBA MINI MESSENGER BAG
The Tenba Photo/Laptop Mini Messenger Bag is simply a great shoulder
bag. Designed to carry a DSLR camera, two to three lenses, a flash and
accessories, it can also hold an iPad-sized tablet or a 13-inch laptop.
Shaped like a small-to medium-sized messenger bag, the internal space
is divided into two main sections, one for a laptop and another for a camera.
The camera compartment is subdivided into three smaller sections, which
are large enough for f/2.8 lenses and can be further divided to accommodate smaller glass. Looking for some extra style? This bag comes in seven
colors, ranging from basic black to burnt orange and plum.
Another really outstanding feature is the Quick Access Zipper at the
top, allowing you plenty of room to reach in and grab your camera without
looking. It’s a lot quicker and more discreet than undoing the buckles and
ripping big Velcro patches. That zipper is a small thing, but it’s something
I’ve long wished for on my other bags.
