In this issue of PDNedu, we explore the theme “All About
Lighting and Light.” In a manner similar to that of a photographer
evaluating light by viewing a situation from all angles, we look
at this subject from multiple perspectives—spanning technical
prowess, creative effect and cultural enlightenment.
In our Storytellers feature (page 28), University of the Arts
student CJ Harker harnesses classroom assignments as a
means to perfect his lighting technique in a two-part body
of work about his skateboarder pals. We were introduced to
Harker by his professor B. Proud, who felt that his passion for
the skateboarding scene and his mastery of Nikon Speedlights
had the makings of a great story.
As a night photographer myself, I’ve been a fan of One to
Watch photographer Vicki DaSilva for quite some time. The
otherworldly effect of her light-painted environments forms a
powerful contrast to the raw energy of her light graffiti sayings,
to make up a unique vision that’s as much about beauty and
substance as it is a yin and yang for our times. Flip to page 34
for details and visit our digital edition to watch video footage
showing how she creates her performance-inspired art.
For a large part of her legendary and multifaceted career, It’s
A Living photographer Lynn Goldsmith (page 40) has evaded
the limelight while burnishing the personas of her celebrity
music subjects. Read our article for a behind-the-scenes peek,
and then get the full scoop in her new book, Rock and Roll
Stories, due out this fall.
Another must-see this fall is the exclusive PDNedu/Nikon
Photo Industry Mashup we’ll be hosting for the photo education
community during PDN PhotoPlusExpo. Please join us for this
free event from 3: 30 to 5 p.m. on Friday, October 25, at the
show’s Expo Theater. The first half hour is just for registered
guests, so sign up today to mingle with the pros, enjoy free refreshments and get first-choice seating for a lively discussion
with Nikon Ambassadors Jerry Ghionis, Corey Rich and Ami
Vitale. To RSVP, visit: < www.pdngallery.com/rsvp/pdnedu_nikon>.
We look forward to seeing you there!
