Training your lens on other people requires
skill sets beyond the technical and the cre-
ative. How do you quickly establish rapport?
How do you direct your subject, or for candid
images, how do you observe? There’s an inherent intimacy
between photographer and subject, whether it’s palpable in
the image or not. Cultivating those relationships is just as important as taking the frame.
Becoming a great portraitist can open up many doors, from
studio work, where every element is conceptualized, to doc-umentary-style editorial work, where viewers get a little slice
of someone else’s life. In this issue, you’ll see newcomer Lucy
Leach’s fashion shoots and Nathanael Turner’s laid-back approach to editorial assignments; read how Brian Finke’s editorial, commercial, gallery and publishing endeavors are rooted
in his personal projects; and learn how Nikon Ambassador
and acclaimed celebrity portraitist Matthew Jordan Smith
lights his beauty shoots. We also roll back the clock to the
Harper’s Bazaar fashion renaissance of the mid-20th century,
when photographers such as Louise Dahl-Wolfe and James
Moore helped shape how fashion stories are visualized today.
Be sure to check out our pick of photo programs that prep
you to start your career right away in this issue’s Special
Report, as well as which indie magazines you may be inter-
ested in pitching in Business Smarts.
We’ve also added a new gallery of photography that will ap-
pear in each issue called Singles. It’s dedicated solely to the
work of students and recent graduates. Submit your work for
consideration at firstname.lastname@example.org.
