There are super zoom cameras and then there’s the
P1000, which sets a new benchmark for those in need
of long, and we do mean long, reach. The P1000 packs
a whopping 125x optical zoom lens equivalent to a 24-
3000mm lens on a 35mm camera. While the camera has
incredible reach—and the image stabilization to support
it—it’s no slouch in the close-up department with the ability
to focus on objects as close as 1 cm away from the lens.
Beyond its telescopic abilities, the P1000 features a
16-megapixel CMOS sensor capable of 4K/30p video
recording. There’s an HDMI output for sending a video
signal to external monitors and recorders and a mic
jack for capturing high-quality audio from an external
mic. You’ll frame your scene through a 3.2-inch vari-
angle display or a 2.3-million dot OLED viewfinder.
The P1000 features Nikon’s SnapBridge technology to
automatically transfer images to a connected mobile
device via Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. Speaking of Bluetooth,
if you spring for the $50 ML-L7 Bluetooth remote you
can control the camera from a distance—great for
reducing camera shake when shooting out at the end
of the camera’s zoom range.
