Getting Shots That No One Else Can

Corey Rich is hanging off a sheer cliff face, balanced on a ladder that’s jury-rigged to the rock with an interlock- ing collection of ropes, bolts and carabiners. Several feet away, a rock climber attempts a mind-numbing physical
contortion to make it to the next handhold while Rich calmly
shoots away. He pays no attention to the fact that, if the ladder
slips, he’ll face-plant into the wall. Yet, if one only saw Rich’s face,

It’s a typical day, even a pedestrian one, for Rich, who has been
photographing rock climbers, skiers, mountain bikers and other
adrenaline-fueled athletic junkies since before he could drive a car.
Rich reinvented adventure photography, not just by tagging along
with the athletes who push the limits but by actively taking part.
